Surviving 7th Grade

SURVIVING 7th GRADE (7 minutes, 16mm)

Best friends Kim and Dara endure the humiliations of 7th grade with a little help from a 6-year-old DJ, a 20-year-old stereo, some fierce moves and a killer beat.

“SURVIVING 7TH GRADE takes just seven-and-a-half sparkling minutes to initiate us into the secret rituals and self-effacing humor that just might enable a couple of nerdy (yet utterly appealing) pubescent girls to weather a stormy passage through adolescence.” – LA Weekly

Director’s Statement

The resiliency of the human spirit is never more heartbreakingly on public display than during the tumultuous years of adolescence when one’s sense of self can ping-pong from good, to bad, to good again, all in the span of one afternoon.

When you’re 13, one event can make you feel like the most unloved and unlovable person in the world. And then, only moments later, you can experience joy and confidence, friendship and laughter. My goal in making “Surviving 7th Grade” was to capture the strength, hope and vitality of being a 13-year-old girl.
