The Home of Split Pea Soup

THE HOME OF SPLIT PEA SOUP (16 minutes)

Things get worse before they get better when Kelly’s stuck for the night in a sleepy, small town, on the worst day of her life, with a tow-truck driver, the wisdom of St. Therese and a little cow chip bingo

Director’s Statement

Perhaps the true definition of adulthood lies in accepting the decisions you made that lead you to a place you never wanted or expected to be. In my thirties, many people I know were dealing with strained marriages, adultery, separation, divorce, unwanted pregnancy, children living with different parents in different homes. I saw how people struggled to reconcile the lives they were living with the lives they had always assumed they would lead.

When I was younger, I had my own preconceptions; these problems happened to certain people, they were the result of poor choices, there was a way to avoid such messiness in life. The older I’ve grown however, the more I realize that we are all susceptible to finding ourselves in difficult situations, and at some point we all find ourselves in need of compassion, mercy and forgiveness.

I wanted to make a film about a woman racked with guilt about having an abortion and leaving her husband. Only when she encounters a stranger’s unexpected empathy can she open her eyes to the world around her to see indeed how much pain, but also how much kindness, there is to be found. And perhaps that is all we need to keep on going; to know that despite our flaws, faults, and regrets there is kindness and forgiveness in the world, and we are all deserving of it.
